A community orchard for Baslow...

Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Baslow Community Orchard Group. We have established an orchard for the benefit of  all residents of Baslow, and for the enjoyment of visitors. The orchard is mostly of traditional varieties of apples, and is located along Over Lane and in a sheltered area accessible from Over Lane and adjacent streets.

Our main community activity is the annual Apple Day celebrations in October. We also run regular work parties where you are very welcome to join us and learn about the care and pruning of fruit trees.

Hay Meadow Report

We are establishing a small “hay meadow” around some of the trees, and we are encouraging many varieties of wild flowers which will be visited by bees and butterflies.

The project has shown early promise, with flowers from many species appearing amongst the grasses. The photos below were taken this summer . At the top is a ringlet butterfly and five-spot burnet moth sharing a scabious flower.

The “hay” is cut and removed at the end of the summer; hopefully flower seeds will have dropped and will germinate next spring. We expect more and more flowers each year.

For more details visit the hay meadow page.

Please look around the website, join in our events and work parties, subscribe to the newsletter and visit the orchard.

We will now added pages to show the varieties of trees that we have planted, so have a look. There are links to nurseries where you can buy your own.
